That’s Just like now mom

We are listening to the Kit Kittredge books on CD.  It is set in Cincinnati During the depression. Kit is explaining to her friend how her dad explained the depression to her.

People started worrying about their money and stopped spending it on things. So the stores who sold those things had to hire less people and the factories that made those things didn’t need as many things made and needed less workers. So they started to close. And soon there wasn’t money for anyone. Later he said the depression is a slippery hole once you get in it is almost impossible to get out.

Elise pipes up and says that is just like now mom.  I thought wow, I hadn’t realized how aware she is of things around her.  So she started to express her worries. Stuff like will we have enough food to eat. We might have to walk to school because we might not be able to buy gas. we will have to get no channels on TV. and Get rid of the internet. Her list went on. I didn’t know how much a 7 year old understands about money.  Then after she paints a pretty darn grim picture she smiles and says we will be OK we will always be a family and Jesus loves us.  HOLY COW she understands way more than most adults.  We will be OK because Jesus loves us how simple, profound and true. We just need to keep remembering that as times get tougher.
